War in Ukraine
On this website we provide an overview on academic options for students and researchers from Ukraine.
Hosting refugee researchers from Ukraine with S-Status in the Basel Area
- Requests for support of researchers go to the "International Office" (ukraine@unibas.ch). This unit registers requests and clarifies whether there are suitable fields of activity in the faculties and refers the applicants to the corresponding faculties (Dean's offices), if existing.
- For researchers with S status who could be hosted by a researcher or research group at our university but do not receive financial support, support is primarily provided through emergency aid (social assistance) financed by the federal government and the cantons.
-
The financial support options for researchers from Ukraine are very limited (as of April 2024). The SNSF Scholars at Risk fellowships, which were specifically aimed at refugee researchers from Ukraine, have finally expired and will no longer be extended. Researchers from Ukraine - like researchers at risk from all over the world in general - can apply for funding under the regular Scholars at Risk programme. Researchers from Ukraine can also apply for open positions at the University of Bassel.
Guest status for Ukrainian students
The University of Basel offers Ukrainian students/doctoral candidates at Bachelor, Master and PhD level to study/research at the University of Basel as visiting students. This was decided by the President's Board of the University at its meeting on March 15, 2022. In doing so, the President's Board relies on the Switzerland-wide recommendations of the Commission for Admissions and Equivalences (KZA) of swissuniversities, which provide for easier access for Ukrainian students to Swiss universities.
Admission to guest studies for Ukrainian students
The University of Basel offers Ukrainian students and doctoral candidates fast and unbureaucratic access to the University of Basel by granting them guest status according to § 31 of the Student Regulations (document in German).
The following requirements for admission to guest status must be met:
- Proof of university matriculation at a Ukrainian university.
- Proof of the protection status S
- in case of guest doctorate: confirmation of a first supervisor at the University of Basel
Enrolment takes place at the level and in a comparable subject corresponding to the proof of enrolment at the Ukrainian university. Enrolment in guest status is generally limited to three semesters in accordance with § 31.
Excluded from the regulation of the guest status are the admission-restricted subjects of the Faculty of Medicine (human medicine and dentistry as well as sports science and nursing science).
Provided that third-country nationals who were enrolled at a Ukrainian university have a protection status S, they can also apply for guest studies at the University of Basel.

Statement of the University management on the War in Ukraine
February 28, 2022. The University of Basel is following with great concern the developments in Ukraine following Russia's military intervention, directed not only against the sovereignty and self-determined development of a country, but also against the democratic and liberal growth of a young European state.
The University fully supports the Statement of solidarity with Ukraine and the supports and endorses the protests of other universities.
The University of Basel stands for open exchange and the freedom of research and teaching, for principles of democracy, tolerance and cooperation across all borders. The University appeals to all the relevant and responsible bodies in Switzerland to work towards ending this blatant and unique disregard for the guarantees of international law in Europe and to support the people affected.
The university management shares the concerns for the well-being of students, academics and researchers in Ukraine, which is under military attack, and will do its utmost to support all academic colleagues affected by the military actions.
