University of Basel Launches Two New Online Courses
The University of Basel will offer two new online courses this spring semester: «Examining African Contributions to Global Health» and «Gender and Labour in the Global South». Both courses are available free of charge to interested participants via the online platform FutureLearn.
28 February 2022
«Examining African Contributions to Global Health» will offer a uniquely African perspective on the topic of global health, examining it not only from a medical perspective, but also through the lens of health economics, history and urban planning. Students will learn about innovations that benefit public health in Africa and also worldwide.
The course is the result of the interdisciplinary project African Contributions to Global Health (2019-2023), which is funded by a Sinergia grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation. Researchers from the Department of History, Swiss TPH and EPFL, and experts from Mali, Zambia, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo and elsewhere will participate in the course. The course will begin on Monday, 28 February on the online platform FutureLearn.
The labor market from a gender-specific perspective
«Gender and Labour in the Global South» will analyze the labor market from a gender-specific perspective – both locally and globally – on the basis of reports from female workers in Nepal, Laos and Rwanda. The course covers topics such as gender segregation in the labor market, paid and unpaid work, care work, gender-sensitive and gender-equitable policy, intersectionality and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labor market.
The course, which represents a collaboration between the University of Basel and the University of Bern, will be available on the FutureLearn platform from 14 March 2022. Experts and workers from Nepal, Laos and Rwanda will also participate in the course.
New moderation of existing courses
In addition to these new courses, two other online courses will benefit from active moderation this spring semester:
- Statistical Shape Modelling: Computing the Human Anatomy with Dr. Marcel Lüthi and Ghazi Bouabene, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (eight weeks from 21 February 2022: registration now open)
- Partnering for Change: Link Research to Societal Challenges with Dr. Jakob Zinsstag, Swiss TPH, among others (six weeks from 14 March)
The university is also offering several other courses with ongoing open registration for interested participants. Moderation times will be announced well in advance. However, the courses can also be completed outside these times. Starting from the registration date, all courses are freely accessible for the scheduled duration of the course, plus two weeks.
Promoting global exchange of knowledge
These courses, which are accessible worldwide, are part of a range of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that bring worldwide visibility to the University of Basel’s academic programs and promote global exchange of knowledge. The online courses are developed in collaboration with the University of Basel’s New Media Center (NMC). The NMC supports learning and teaching with videos, animations, games and other multimedia solutions.
