Campus & Management
Various departments are working towards continuously making the University of Basel campus more sustainable. This includes the responsible use of ecological and social resources.
People
The University of Basel has adopted the goal of being a family-friendly, equality-oriented, non-discriminatory, accessible university. It supports and values the diverse strengths of its employees and students, independent of age, religion, gender, cultural heritage, sexual orientation and disability. As a learning organization, it is constantly growing, and it offers its employees outstanding, family-friendly working conditions in a performance-oriented environment.
Energy management
The University of Basel is continuously looking for ways to make its energy supply even more climate-friendly, resource-conserving and efficient. Energy procurement has been based predominantly on renewable sources since 2020. In addition, measures to reduce energy consumption are identified and implemented on an ongoing basis.
In summer 2021, the university installed its first own photovoltaic panels system on the roof of the Center for Pharmaceutical Sciences. An additional photovoltaic installation is planned for the roof of the new building of the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health in Muttenz, and further installations are currently being evaluated.
Resilient Campus
The University of Basel campus should offer a study and work environment that is adapted to climate change and is pleasant and attractive even in the increasingly hot months. The greening of the forecourt of the new Biozentrum is currently being implemented in order to contribute to the development of a resilient campus and the improvement of the urban climate. The project "Dachbegrünung" of the AG Nachhaltigkeit has already greened the roof of the new Biozentrum and a roof of the Department of Biomedicine with the support of Campus Management.
Waste management
The university's waste monitoring system has been significantly improved in recent years and is being further optimized. Various measures are being implemented to reduce the volume of waste and increase recycling rates.
Catering
The university is committed to providing its students and staff with sustainable catering. The food and drink on offer should be both tasty and varied, while at the same time meeting high ecological and social standards. The University of Basel concept for sustainable catering is based on the SV Group’s sustainability concept. The University and the SV Group set annual targets and agree on measures for the continuous improvement of the catering service.
With its concept for sustainable catering, the University of Basel is pursuing the following goals together with the SV Group:
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Increaseg the range of vegetarian and vegan options
- Focus on seasonal and regional purchasing
- Meat from certified animal-friendly farming
- Reduce food waste and other waste
Financial Investments
The University of Basel's investment regulations set out specific sustainability criteria for the University's non-current financial assets. In addition to financial guidelines, these include environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria as well as an exclusion list to be taken into account.
