Nikolaus und Bertha Burckhardt-Bürgin Foundation
Pursuant to the will of both donors: “the purpose of the foundation is to serve academic research and studies; in other words, the interest of the assets is to be used to awarded scholarships to talented students from all faculties and grant funding for scientific and academic research.” The foundation charter can be read in the Office of Early Career Researchers' Development.
Short Stays
The University of Basel and the Nikolaus and Bertha Burckhardt-Bürgin Foundation award grants to doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. Grants can be awarded for a short stay at a research institution abroad (in justified exceptional cases also in Switzerland). The grants cover actual travel costs, a lump sum for accommodation and meal costs as well as actual costs for possible fees. There is a cost cap of CHF 5000 per application. The acquisition of matching funds is possible and should be declared on the application.
Short Time Travel Grants
The Short Time Travel Grants are aimed at doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers from all faculties, as well as from the university and associated institutes of the University of Basel, who wish to advance their academic career during a short stay at a research institution abroad.

Target group
All enrolled doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers from all faculties as well as the associated institutes of the University of Basel are eligible to apply.
Type of stays
- Scientific research stays at universities or research institutions
- Field studies and research trips
- Stays in collections, archives or laboratories etc.
- Summer and winter schools (with a focus on research)
Duration
The duration of the short stay should be a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 20 weeks.
Submission deadlines
February 15th and September 15th by 12:00 noon each day (via Online form).
Start of the short stay
The earliest possible start of the short stay is June 1st or December 1st.
Evaluation and decision
Applications are evaluated by the members of the Board of the Nikolaus and Bertha Burckhardt-Bürgin-Foundation and external experts. The evaluation process is competitive and is based on an assessment of the mobility benefit, person and project.
