Information for refugees
If you are a refugee who is interested in studying for a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate at the University of Basel or would like to learn more about everyday student life at the University of Basel, you should contact the Coordination Office for Refugees at an early stage. The usual application deadlines and admission requirements apply.
In our initial, non-binding consultation, we will clarify whether you fulfill the admission requirements and/or which additional requirements (if any) you still need to fulfill to matriculate at the University of Basel. If studying is not an option, we will help you to find the source of information you need.
Bridging program for Refugees
People from a refugee background who fulfill the admission criteria of the University of Basel can complete a maximum of two trial semesters.
This includes:
- attending a maximum of three courses with no tuition fees
- an intensive language course before the semester begins, followed by a weekly language course
- access to Unisport's wide range of offerings
- personal support from experienced students (mentoring program)
exchange with students and other refugees at the University of Basel
Participants in the program cannot take part in assessments or earn credit points/a degree. Their status is equivalent to that of a course auditor (without a student ID); this is free of charge.
Participants in the bridging program cannot attend courses at the Faculty of Medicine.
Conditions for participating in the program:
- Resident in the Basel region
- Good knowledge of the language of instruction (B1 German and/ or B2 English)
- Secondary or high school leaving certificate that qualifies a person for university studies
Studying at the University of Basel
The regular application deadlines and admission requirements apply to refugees who wish to study for a Bachelor's, Master's or doctoral degree at the University of Basel.
Offene Hörsaal
The Offene Hörsaal was founded in 2016 and is a student association at the University of Basel that campaigns for greater equality of opportunity for asylum seekers and refugees. In cooperation with the Coordination Office for Refugees, Offener Hörsaal organizes and coordinates the mentoring system during the taster semester and offers framework programs to promote social exchange and the integration of refugee participants. The association also acts as a contact and mediation point to support asylum seekers in their studies. Through its activities, the Offene Hörsaal contributes to diversity at the University of Basel.
