Primo Schär is Professor and Research Group Leader for Molecular Genetics at the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel. Since 2024 he serves as Vice President for Research and is responsible for Career Advancement, Technology Transfer (Unitectra), International Office, Grants Office, Digital Research Infrastructures (sciCORE Center for Scientific Computing, CeDA Center for Data Analytics), Research Networks, and Open Science.

Primo Schär (born 1961), studied biology and biochemistry, specializing in molecular genetics. He completed his doctorate with a thesis on «DNA recombination in meiosis» (1991) at the University of Bern. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the «Imperial Cancer Research Fund», now Cancer Research UK, in London and as a junior research group leader at the «Institute of Molecular Cancer Research» at the University of Zurich. In 2003, he was appointed Professor of Molecular Genetics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Basel, was Vice Dean of Research 2017-2024 and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Basel 2018-2024.

In addition to his scientific activities, he is involved in various local, national and international committees in academic self-governance with a focus on promoting young scientists and research.
