Signet Teaching Excellence Awards 2025

With the Teaching Excellence Awards 2025, the University of Basel wishes to foster discussions about good teaching and learning.

Nominations: Students nominate lecturers and teaching staff and give reasons for their choice. Just three independent nominations with compelling reasons are enough for someone to be considered for a teaching excellence award.

Adjudication: A preselection round by the Educational Development Team will prepare the nominations for the five juries. The juries represent diverse perspectives on university learning and teaching, but also different academic disciplines. The juries will decide whom to include on the shortlist for each prize category and will select the winners.

Award categories

Engaging Courses: The university needs lecturers who inspire and motivate students. Nominations may be submitted for lecturers who connect to a wide variety of students and create a welcoming learning environment. Jury: Board of skuba

Strong Foundations: Clearly conveyed fundamentals provide guidance and facilitate entry into the subject. Nominations may be submitted for lecturers whose teaching enables students to acquire essential competencies and to prepare well for assessments. Jury: Lecturers holding a "Certificate of Higher Education Practice" of the University of Basel

Collaboration and Interaction: Learning in exchange with others opens up new perspectives and contributes to the development of communication and teamwork skills. Nominations may be submitted for lecturers who offer particularly interactive courses and actively foster collaboration. Jury: Representatives of student associations of the University of Basel

Supporting Learning (Credit Suisse Award*): Certain courses—tutorials, practicals, exercises, proseminars, etc.—support students in their learning process. Nominations may be submitted for teaching assistants and students who meet learners at their current level, building bridges to subject matter and fellow students. Jury: Representatives of student associations of the University of Basel

Service to Teaching: Students and lecturers benefit enormously from a supportive environment. Nominations may be submitted for members of the university—staff, (student) associations, (coordination) offices, and more—who contribute to creating an enjoyable and smooth study experience. Jury: Deans of study of the University of Basel
