Two new professors at the University of Basel
The University Council has appointed David Berger as Professor of Intensive Care and Andreas Müller as Professor of Orthopedics/Traumatology.
12 March 2024
Professor David Berger is to become the new Clinical Professor of Intensive Care at the Faculty of Medicine. The position will begin at the University Hospital Basel (USB) on 1 June 2024. Along with his appointment as Clinical Professor, he will also become Head of Intensive Care at the USB.
David Berger is currently Senior Physician and Associate Professor of Intensive Care at the University of Bern. There, he leads a research group specializing in cardiopulmonary physiology and extracorporeal life support.
David Berger studied human medicine at the University of Basel, earning his doctorate there in 2005. During his training as an intensive care physician in Basel, he moved to the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at the Inselspital Bern as part of a fellowship. In 2012, he was officially certified as a specialist in intensive care and completed his habilitation at the University of Bern in 2019.
His research mainly focuses on the clinical pathophysiology of the circulatory system and the lungs, in particular the volume conditions of the cardiovascular system and interactions with extracorporeal circulations. This is closely linked to his interest in identifying prognostic and therapeutically relevant parameters from the wealth of data generated by patient monitoring and integrating them into clinical practice. He has a broad clinical background and represents interdisciplinary intensive care.
Orthopedics/Traumatology
The University Council has selected Professor Andreas Müller to be Clinical Professor of Orthopedics/Traumatology at the Faculty of Medicine. The position will begin at the University Hospital Basel (USB) on 1 April 2024.
Andreas Müller, born in 1976 and raised in Riehen, has been Professor of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University of Basel since 2020. He has been Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology ad interim at the USB since 2022. Along with his promotion to full professor, he will also be named as head of the department.
Andreas Müller studied human medicine at the University of Basel, where he received his doctorate in 2005 and completed his habilitation in 2014. He performed his clinical training at the Stadtspital Triemli in Zurich and the USB, and additionally spent research stays at the AO Research Institute in Davos and at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA).
His research focuses on functional biomechanics, in particular the shoulder, regenerative surgery, orthopedic and traumatological outcome research, and tissue engineering. In the clinical field, Müller specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery and has led the corresponding team at the USB for many years.
