New assistant professor of public law
The President’s Board has appointed Dr. Phil Baumann as assistant professor (without tenure track) of public law at the Faculty of Law. He will take up his five-year position on 1 February 2024.

Phil Baumann studied Law and Economics at the University of St.Gallen. In 2013, he was admitted to the bar of the Canton of Zurich and subsequently worked as a lawyer in a major Swiss commercial law firm.
In 2017, he obtained his Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Economic Law from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2019, he earned his doctorate at the University of Lucerne, where he has been working as a senior academic assistant to the professorship of public law and philosophy of law since 2020.
With his several years of experience as a lawyer and his research and teaching activities in the fields of public and administrative law, commercial administrative law and health law, as well as in specific areas of administrative and tax law, he brings valuable expertise to his future role at the University of Basel.
In his habilitation project, he focuses on basic universal services; in his spare time, he also produces the podcast 100 Bundesgerichtsentscheide, in which he discusses and contextualizes decisions of the Swiss Federal Supreme Court that have shaped the history and society of Switzerland.
