Family-friendliness
The university strives to welcome families in a way that is both visible and viable in everyday life at the university. The university supports a balance between studying, career and family through its family-friendly personnel policies and university structures.
In addition to the established university day care center, the University Library now offers a parent-child room with a play corner, nursing area and diaper-changing table. In the fall semester 2018, the cafeterias began offering meals for children. Each café and cafeteria at the University of Basel has at least one children’s highchair available.
Students and employees can also receive advice from the Family Services office.
Support for doctoral student parents and postdoc mothers
The get on track funding is set aside for doctoral students who are parents. Each semester, support options are offered to help students complete their PhD within the allotted time. In 2018, twelve «get on track» applicants received funding.
To focus and maintain high quality in research, stay on track offers a range of funding options for postdoctoral students and professorial candidates during early motherhood. The support options are also specifically designed to help them continue with their own research, despite their additional family obligations. In 2018, seven female postdoctoral students received support.
