“Those who cease to improve cease to be good.”
(Robert Bosch/Eduard Mörike)
The University of Basel strives to continue growing in excellence in its core areas of teaching and research, and in its management and support activities. This cannot be achieved by a single de-partment alone; it requires a culture of excellence that is reflected by each and every member of university staff. The driving force behind a real culture of excellence is ongoing reflection and dialog between stakeholders concerning the requirements for excellence and the methods of meeting these requirements.
The General Secretariat office promotes an active culture of excellence by supporting the professional, resource-friendly gathering of information and opinions as a basis for well-founded reflection and evidence-based dialog and decision making. The principles of “empowerment” and “commitment” are central to this process. Accordingly, the General Secretariat office does not generally carry out surveys of university units. Rather, it provides the technical and content-based skills required for each unit to independently address the questions relevant to its own excellence and carry out its own evidence-based development.
