Conditions of Participation
The conditions of participation for attending the Transferable Skills courses are explained below. In addition, the most important points are summarized in an explanatory video.
Program
The training program of the University Basel is accessible online. In addition, the organizers of the training program for faculty and staff announce the new program in their biannual newsletter. Doctoral candidates and postdocs enrolled at the University of Basel are also informed via e-mail about the current Transferable Skills course program.
Target group
The transferable skills courses are free of charge and exclusively reserved for doctoral candidates and postdocs of the University of Basel. Doctoral candidates from interuniversity doctoral programs between the University of Basel and a partner institution/university as well as doctoral candidates from partner universities of the European Campus (University of Freiburg, Strasbourg, Haute-Alsace and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)) or one of the partners of the EPICUR alliance (Adam Mickiewicz University, University of Amsterdam, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Southern Denmark, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences) are also eligible to participate. Eucor/EPICUR students are asked to send proof of their status as a doctoral candidate (e.g. confirmation of enrollment, copy of student ID) at one of the partner universities in the respective semester to grace@unibas.ch before registering for a course. In addition, the remark “Eucor” or “EPICUR” should be added when submitting the course registration.
Registration
All courses are opened for online registration at the same time. To register for courses, use the registration link at the end of the course description. Unfortunately, it is not possible to register via e-mail. The enrollment as a doctoral candidate or the position as a postdoc at the University of Basel will be verified. When you register for a course, you will receive an automatically generated message confirming that your registration has been submitted. Please note that within a few working days, you will receive another e-mail that either confirms your course participation or informs you that you are only on the waiting list. By registering, you commit to attending the entire course.
Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to give as many doctoral candidates and postdocs as possible the opportunity to attend at least one course, participants can register for a maximum of three courses per semester. If you register for more than three courses, your additional applications are placed on a waiting list and the transferable skills coordinators will allocate the available places.
Please note that the registration period for individual courses usually ends four weeks before the course begins. You will receive an e-mail with detailed course information at least two weeks after the registration deadline.
The courses are designed for a minimum number of participants. A course will be canceled if the minimum number is not met. Those who have registered for the course will be notified of its cancellation by e-mail. Once the maximum number of course participants is reached, additional registrations will be placed on the waiting list.
Withdrawal, absence or partial course attendance
Please cancel your course registration as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch so that other people interested in the course can move up from the waiting list. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends. Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
If an urgent, unforeseeable or inevitable event before or during the course prevents a participant from attending, a written and substantiated withdrawal request that includes appropriate documentation (e.g. a doctor’s note) must be submitted to the Graduate Center (grace@unibas.ch) immediately and without being prompted. The transferable skills coordinators decide on the approval of the withdrawal request. A retroactive submission of reasons for your non-attendance of a course that has already been completed will not be accepted.
Certificate of attendance
Participants who have completed the course successfully receive a certificate of attendance. Necessary requirements are the fulfillment of all tasks (including homework assignments, if given) as well as perfect attendance.
Course credits
The courses are designed according to the ECTS principles. 1 ECTS credit is the equivalent of a workload of 30 hours. For courses that require 30 hours of independent study and/or course attendance, the Graduate Center may award an ECTS credit. After successful completion of the training, ECTS credits will automatically be transferred to the participant's credit points account towards the end of the semester (end of January/July) and will appear in the academic progress summary. No further action on the part of the doctoral candidates is required.
For courses which do not fulfill this condition, it is possible to make an individual Learning Contract with the supervisor of the doctoral thesis. The courses can be listed in the individual study plan which is part of the doctoral agreement and confirmed by the signature of the supervisor. Here you can find more information about the doctoral agreement and corresponding downloads. Learning Contracts should be submitted before the course begins.
