Three New Professors at the Faculty of Medicine

The University Council has appointed new professors of oncology, obstetrics and antenatal medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Professor Mascha Binder has been appointed Professor of Medical Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine, and will begin work at the University Hospital of Basel on 1 April 2023. Binder is currently a professor at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and has been head of the Internal Medicine IV clinic at University Medicine Halle since 2018. Her research focuses on tumor immunology and precision cell therapies.

Binder obtained her doctorate from the University of Freiburg’s Institute for Biochemistry in 2004. She undertook clinical training in the US, France, Italy, Australia and Togo before joining the Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in 2008. There, she served as deputy director of the Clinic for Hematology and Oncology, and as a professor of immunological cancer research and treatment. She is 43 years old and has four children.

In connection with her appointment by the University Council, Binder will also become the head of medical oncology at the University Hospital of Basel.

New Professor of Obstetrics and Antenatal Medicine

On 1 February 2023, Professor Beatrice Mosimann, from Bern, will become the new Professor of Obstetrics and Antenatal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine. She completed her medical studies at the University of Bern, where she also obtained a doctorate in gynecology and obstetrics in 2002 and was granted authorization to teach (venia docendi) in obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine in 2018.

She was officially certified as a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics in 2009, at the same time achieving certification in the focal areas of operative gynecology and obstetrics, and maternal-fetal medicine. Mosimann has previously worked at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, completed a research fellowship in fetal medicine under Professor Kypros Nicolaides at King’s College Hospital in London, and worked at the Labatt Family Heart Centre in Toronto. She has been part of the University Clinic for Gynecology at Bern’s Inselspital university hospital since 2013, initially as an attending physician and since 2019 as a senior physician.

Her research focuses on the creation and development of screening algorithms following pregnancy complications, with the aim of minimizing antenatal and postnatal risks for mother and child through targeted preventative measures and interventions.

With her appointment as Professor of Obstetrics and Antenatal Medicine, Mosimann will also become the head of obstetrics and antenatal medicine, and co-head of the Women’s Health Clinic at the University Hospital of Basel.

New Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The University Council has appointed Professor Florian M. Thieringer as Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine. He will take up his role on 1 October 2022. Thieringer obtained a doctorate in human medicine in 2012 and in dental medicine in 2018, both from the University of Basel. He has been part of the clinic for oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University Hospital of Basel (UHBS) since 2004 and has been a senior physician since 2017. With this appointment, Thieringer will also become the new head of the clinic for oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University Hospital of Basel.

Thieringer studied medicine at Universität Regensburg and the Technical University of Munich, and dental medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. He was officially certified as a specialist in oral surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery in 2013. Thieringer is a veteran of numerous clinical and research stays abroad, including at Uppsala University in Sweden and at University Hospital Frankfurt am Main. He has volunteered with the Nicaragua-based surgical aid project Nicaplast for more than ten years.

Thieringer’s clinical focus is on computer-aided tumor, reconstruction and dysgnathia surgery, and his research focus is on the use of high-tech digital methods in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Thieringer founded the 3D Print Lab at the University Hospital of Basel in 2016 and remains its co-director. He is also co-principal investigator of the MIRACLE II flagship project at the University of Basel’s Department of Biomedical Engineering. The 45-year-old is married with two daughters.
