Economic Impact & Innovation
With the Innovation Office, the university is systematically seeking to improve the transfer of knowledge and technology to wider society. The focus is on start-up funding and support through courses, workshops and events, as well as on funding for innovative collaborations. In 2021 and 2022, a total of 23 new start-ups were founded at the university and over CHF 240 million of private investments were raised from venture capitalists.
Cyclical knowledge transfer from university research to the market and back is of central importance for a sustainable economy and society. The University of Basel plays an important role at the intersection of research, society and the economy and brings partners together who can work collaboratively on solutions.
Several start-ups founded
Start-ups are enormously important for a sustainable economy. On the one hand, they can create high-quality jobs themselves by raising venture capital. On the other hand, start-ups cooperate with the university to advance the development of technologies, which leads to additional jobs in research. This positive cycle strengthens the economy of the Basel region, as confirmed by the university’s surveyed figures.
Thanks to an growing team, the Innovation Office was also able to expand its activities in 2021 and 2022 in both start-up funding and industry collaboration. This is reflected both in greater numbers of start-ups being founded and in their increased success. Twelve new start-ups were founded in 2021 and 11 in 2022. Altogether, over CHF 240 million of private investments were raised from venture capitalists.
In order to fund innovations to combat antibiotic resistance, the Innovation Office, together with partners from Germany and company sponsors, initiated the new incubator INCATE. The project brings together translational and foundational research, industry, experienced entrepreneurs and investors from throughout Europe to focus on developing new therapies, diagnostic tools and interventions that contribute to reducing the prevalence and effects of antimicrobial resistance.
Innovative methods against antibiotic resistance
In response to the societal challenge of the spread of antibiotic-resistant microbes, the Innovation Office initiated the SPEARHEAD project. This project aims to curb the spread of antibiotic resistance with innovative digital tools and patient engagement. It brings a multidisciplinary team from research and industry together to develop a solution that enables the cost-effective use of antibiotics and slows the development of an antibiotic resistance.
Propelling Grants for outstanding projects
The connection between university research and large companies is especially important when it comes to solving complex societal problems, for example in the areas of health or the environment. One aspect of this is the implementation of scientific discoveries in order to overcome systemic challenges. This is why the Innovation Office prioritizes initiating new projects over workshops and meetings. The heart of the Innovation Office's work is always the people who strive to connect and implement research findings and entrepreneurial ideas innovatively and creatively. By successfully awarding a total of six Propelling Grants in 2021 and 2022, the University funded outstanding projects and supported them on the way to commercialization and founding.
