Residence Registration Procedure
Apartments in Switzerland are generally rented through the landlord or real estate agencies. Unlike many other countries, the new tenant does not pay any commissions for this.
When completing the application form, we recommend responding as soon as possible and having the necessary paperwork ready. This usually includes an official debt/credit report for applicants whose last place of residence was Switzerland or Germany (Imortant: All those with previous address abroad need to stress that this document does not exist abroad.) It serves as proof that no debt collection proceedings or enforcement against the prospective tenant are in progress. This report can be obtained from the local/cantonal debt collection and bankruptcy office (Betreibungs- und Konkursamt in case of Switzerland) or online with Schufa (in case of Germany).
Insurance
In addition, proof of personal liability insurance as well as household insurance is usually required (it may be sufficient if you agree to take out these policies and present proof thereof by the time the keys are handed over).
References
Nearly all application forms ask for a few references who the landlord can contact for information about a prospective tenant. We recommend listing the names and contact details (phone number and email address) of colleagues, friends or your employer.
Hint: Do not proceed if there is a) no flat visit possible AND b) no contract presented! There are not many scams, however they do exist. In case of slightest doubt and anyhow in case of any questions: The Welcome & Euraxess Center is happy to double-check and help!
