Flatsharing, Dormitories, Temporary Solutions
The WoVe takes care of students' special housing requirements.
A sensible solution for many newcomers is often to find temporary housing during the first days and weeks upon arrival and then to look for a more permanent place to live.
Flatsharing, dormitories, housing community
Dormitories are specifically aimed at students and certain groups. When looking for rooms in shared housing or student dorms, students should always visit the WoVe website. Please also refer to the info page for student housing. It is smart to check the University Marketplace, too. However, be aware that scams can happen - read the important information in terms of fraud here.
Guesthouse of the University of Basel
The Foundation Guesthouse has four properties in Basel with 35 furnished and fully equipped apartments and studios that are rented to lecturers, postdocs and academic guests on a temporary basis.
Additional temporary solutions
There are a variety of housing agencies and other options to help you find a temporary place to stay. Directly beside the Campus Petersplatz Cityflats offer furnished apartments. Additionally, bed & breakfasts and boarding houses are an option. Youth hostels as well as hostel-like accommodation like Basel BackPack, Silo, Hyve or Generation YMCA Hostel are also popular and are open to everyone, not just young people. They offer not only shared rooms, but often as well single and double rooms with an appealing quality. Provider such as Ariv offer attractive accommodation in combination with co-working space and socializing options.
Contact the Welcome Center for a overview list of options.
Hotels
A large selection of hotels can be found in Basel and the surrounding area. Basel Tourism manages a list of hotels and best-price offers.
Note: Basel has been a city of trade fairs and commerce since the Middle Ages. Today, public exhibitions, conventions and trade fairs take place year-round, some of which attract a large, international audience. Basel is also a popular destination for city visitors, and the growing number of flight connections is bringing more and more tourists to Basel each year.
During certain days and weeks each year, nearly all hotels within a radius of 50 to 100 kilometers of Basel in the three-country region as well as nearly all temporary alternative options are completely booked out. Finding any accommodation whatsoever can be very difficult during these periods. We recommend contacting Basel Tourism, postponing your arrival/stay somewhat if possible or seeking out private accommodation with colleagues.
This situation occurs primarily during the two annual, partly world-famous fairs: Basel World and Art Basel. Other major happenings such as sporting events, the Basel Christmas market and conferences can limit availability during specific times and affect prices.
Tip
All hotel guests in Basel-Stadt are given a Mobility Ticket when they check into their hotels. This ticket is valid for transportation in the TNW zones 10, 11, 13 and 15 for the duration of your stay. Some hotels provide a reservation confirmation with the remark “Mobility Ticket”, which serves as a valid ticket for the trip from the airport to the hotel.
