Fraudulent practices in food production, especially false claims of geographical origin, cause billions of dollars in economic damage every year. Botanists at the University of Basel have now developed a model that can be used to determine the origin of food in an efficient and low-cost manner.
Snow cover in the Alps has been melting almost three days earlier per decade since the 1960s. This trend is temperature-related and cannot be compensated by heavier snowfall. By the end of the century, snow cover at 2,500 meters could disappear a month earlier than today, as simulations by environmental scientists at the University of Basel demonstrate.

Ansgar Kahmen, plant scientist at the University of Basel, employs botanical archives to assess how plants have responded physiologically to environmental changes over the past 150 years. The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded him a Consolidator Grant worth CHF 2.1 million for his research.
