Promotion system
Structural professorships at the University of Basel are filled at the level of assistant professor with tenure track, associate professor and full or clinical professor. Promotion to the next category is made after an appropriate time period and successful evaluation. In addition, associate and full professors employed at the University of Basel have the opportunity to apply for a salary class promotion if they have a relevant track record. This leads to an increase in salary class.
The processes and guidelines are governed by the regulations for academic staff (Ordnung für das Wissenschaftliche Personal) and the guidelines for promotions at the University of Basel.
Time period
The timing and timeframe of the evaluation is determined in consultation with the persons concerned and the department or subject area. Depending on the type of promotion, different time periods apply before the evaluation process is initiated. These are outlined in the regulations for academic staff (Ordnung für das Wissenschaftliche Personal) and explained in the guidelines for promotions.
Evaluation procedures
In the case of a promotion with a change of category, an evaluation committee is appointed by the faculty management body to lead the evaluation procedure and review the professor's performance in the areas of research, teaching, promotion of early career researchers, personality, academic self-administration and services on the basis of evaluation criteria defined by the faculty. The committee also obtains external expert opinions and statements from the students. The results of the evaluation are recorded in a report that is adopted by the faculty assembly or the faculty committee. After the President’s Board has dealt with the evaluation report, the final decision is made by the University Council. In the case of clinical professorships, the application for promotion is handled in advance by the Medical Coordination Committee (KOG).
Simplified procedure
A simplified evaluation procedure is applied in the case of salary class promotions. The professor’s performance record is assessed by the Dean’s Office; if the assessment is positive, an application for promotion is submitted to the President's Board. The latter acknowledges receipt of the application and makes the final decision.
