INSIDE professional education opportunities for professors
The university’s professional education program «INSIDE» is aimed specifically at professors at the University of Basel. It incorporates six modules, some of which are designed for newly appointed professors and some for professors who perform leadership roles in academic self-administration (e.g. head of department, head of faculty).
INSIDE I – Practical Insights
This module for newly appointed professors includes an introduction to the Swiss higher education landscape and the organization, structure, culture, values and strategy of the university. Information on support options, the most important services and relevant aspects in the areas of teaching, research, infrastructure, IT services and finance, people and culture are also presented. The module is part of the core offering. Registration is by invitation.

INSIDE II – Leadership
This module for newly appointed professors focuses on the topic of personnel management and leadership. Participants become familiar with their various roles and learn about leadership models, principles and tools, as well as key points concerning the Code of Conduct, promotion of early career researchers and employee reviews. The module is part of the core offering. Registration is by invitation.

INSIDE III – Mastering University Management
This module is designed specifically for professors with additional leadership functions and includes various sections on university governance and personnel and financial management. In addition, certain relevant topics from INSIDE I and II modules are explored in greater depth (e.g. promotion of early career researchers, diversity, academic and personal integrity). The course is part of the core offering. Registration is by invitation.

INSIDE IV – Leadership Lab for Challenging Situations
This module is open to all professors and includes various workshops with case studies on conducting interviews, self-management, conflict management, change management and good clinical practice. The half-day to one-day course is optional.
The concept is still under development and will be continuously supplemented.

INSIDE V – New Skills à la Carte / A la Carte Courses
The fifth module is also open to all professors. It consists of individual courses on specific skills such as recruitment in science, managing a research lab and media training (usually lasting half a day to one day), and can be financed from operational or appointment credits.
The concept is still under development and will be continuously supplemented.

For professors who have been working at the University of Basel for a maximum of two years or who have taken on a new position (e.g. head of department), there is the opportunity to complete an intensive short coaching program on the topic of leadership. In a maximum of five hours, participants are strengthened in the development of their leadership skills through an interactive and practice-oriented approach and are supported in the transfer of the concepts and techniques learned into everyday professional life. INSIDE VI
The INSIDE VI module is specifically designed for former and current deans. Members of university management address strategic issues currently relevant to the university in a half-day retreat.
In addition to the various «INSIDE» modules, professors at the university also have access to numerous other courses and workshops as part of the general professional education program offered by the University of Basel.
