New Professor of Experimental Surgical Oncology
The University Council has named Prof. Mohamed Bentires-Alj as professor of Experimental Surgical Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine. He will take up his position at the Department of Biomedicine on September 1, 2016.
31 August 2016
Since 2006, Mohamed Bentires-Alj has been a research group leader at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) in Basel. With his appointment, the ERC Advanced Grant he received in spring 2016 will be transfered to the University of Basel.
At the molecular, cellular, and whole organism levels, he assesses mechanisms that influence normal and neoplastic breast stem cells, metastasis, and resistance to therapy.
Mohamed Bentires-Alj earned his Pharmaceutical Sciences degree in 1996 at the University of Liège (Belgium), where he also obtained a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2001. From 2001 to 2006 he worked as a postdoc at Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA) and from 2004 to 2006 as a research assistant for the Belgian National Fund of Scientific Research (FNRS).
His lab uses interdisciplinary approaches to elucidate the integrated effects of signaling pathways and epigenetics on breast cell fate and tumor heterogeneity, and to leverage mechanistic understanding into therapy.
With clinicians from the University Hospital of Basel, they are building a breast cancer personalized medicine program and have founded the Basel Breast Consortium BBC.
The award-winning researcher will strengthen the Oncology and Cancer Research focal area at the Department of Biomedicine.
