SHAPE - Your Ideas for a Sustainable Future
SHAPE (Student Hub for Action, Projects and Engagement) is a program to promote student projects related to sustainability at the University of Basel. Students have the opportunity to develop their own projects as part of a workshop and/or apply for project funding.
Workshop for project development
Do you want to help make your university or region more sustainable? Whether you already have an idea for a sustainable project or not, you can (further) develop your idea and get to know other committed students at our two-part workshop. Together you will develop a project for a sustainable future!
Tag 1: Brainstorming & Ideation - Find your project idea!
Tag 2: Projekt development - How can your project become reality?
In 2024, two workshops were held by the Innovation Office and the Sustainability Office. No further workshops are planned in the near future. We will keep you up to date here. If you have any questions or ideas for a sustainable project, just send us an email (Katharina and Sophie)!
Project funding
Do you have a sustainable project idea that you would like to implement? Then apply for SHAPE project funding. Receive funding of up to CHF 2,000 and support with project implementation.
You can apply for project funding regardless of whether you took part in the workshop or not. You can find all further information on the conditions of participation and funding criteria in the guidelines.
There is currently no call for funding. However, if you have an idea that you would like to implement, please get in touch with us (Katharina and Sophie). Together we'll work out how we can support you and make your project a reality.
Currently funded projects
We are currently supporting two projects that were funded in the fall semester 2024:
SHAPE science, LEAF the lab: This project tackles the critical problem of high energy consumption and CO₂ emissions in research laboratories and aims to create a lasting culture of sustainability at the University of Basel. In this context, a seminar and workshop on the topic of “Green Labs” will be held, energy consumption in laboratories will be measured and the sustainable certification of some laboratories will be sought.
Rhy(reflecting) on the SDGs: This project builds on a theatrically staged city tour that was created on the occasion of an interdisciplinary EUCOR seminar in spring 2024. Three characters guide visitors through Basel and shed light on innovative and critical aspects of current urban development, always with a focus on sustainability. The city tour will also be made accessible to children and young people in cooperation with schools and youth organizations in the future.
The following projects were funded in the spring semester 2024:
MedEnglish Academy: This project aims to build an online platform with medical English courses tailored to Russian-speaking medical professionals. The course is aimed at people with limited financial resources and enables participants to engage with the global medical community to improve health standards in their regions.
Nachhaltige Gewürzrouten: This project promotes community integration through cooking classes led by diverse groups of different cultures. Participants explore sustainable and authentic recipes from around the world together. Upcoming events can be found on Instagram.
SustainableOil: This project aims to collect used cooking oil from local restaurants and households for sustainable use.
