Carte Blanche is an offer for female professors of the University of Basel. At the end of the year an exclusive event with a prominent guest speaker is held, which serves as a forum for networking, dialogue and exciting ideas outside of everyday research work.

Leadership in Arts. How to make the Future feminine.

At this year's edition of the Carte Blanche event series, we had the privilege of spending an evening with Elena Filipovic at the Kunsthalle Basel. As head of the Kunsthalle Basel and future director of the renowned Kunstmuseum Basel, her talk focussed in particular on the importance of the targeted promotion of female leaders and the ongoing commitment to combating prejudice in application processes and in everyday professional life. Her inspiring life journey and her commitment to the visibility of women and marginalised groups in the art scene were thought-provoking.

After a long break, the popular networking event for female professors could finally take place again. The speaker at this year's edition was sociologist, professor and leadership coach Prof. Dr. Heather Hofmeister. At 35, she was the first woman in the C-suite leadership team at the University of Aachen, and in her talk she addressed the hurdles of being the only woman represented in high leadership bodies. At the same time, she focused in particular on the potential and importance of gender equality work in leadership teams.

Nicoletta della Valle is currently the Director of the Federal Office of Police fedpol. She is known to have effected some significant changes and innovations in the last years since her inauguration as head of fedpol in 2014. In her speech, she shared her personal experiences of executing leadership and promoting change as a woman within a clearly male-dominated and rather conservative environment.

C’est le ton qui fait la musique - Leadership concepts in orchestras

Lena-Lisa Wüstendörfer is one of the world’s few women conductors and one of the brightest young talents on today’s conducting scene. At the moment of the event, she acted as the musical director of the Young Orchestra Basel, the Berne University Orchestra, the Zurich Messiah Choir as well as the Berne Bach Choir. She also guest conducted numerous orchestras such as the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra or the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen. Leadership skills are fundamental in her business since «the important thing is whether you can lead the orchestra competently through the piece.» In her speech, she talked about different leadership concepts and styles in orchestras and combined this with fascinating video clips.
What’s the secret? Behind the scenes of successful group dynamics

Group dynamics can be crucial for leadership. How can they be understood, managed and cultivated? This was the main focus of the training «Group & Mood. Understanding group dynamics and the changing moods they cause in teams and organizations». After the networking lunch, the participants had the opportunity to look behind some other scenes – at the Theater of Basel. Surprisingly, some interesting parallels between the management of so many different groups at a theater and at academia could be found.

Showing impressing pictures Evelyne Binsack talked about the physical and mental strength, to undertake an arduous journey, confront challenges and risks, persevere in the face of defeats and recognize victories when they come.
The ART of Time – Time at the ART

The whole day was centered around time, and how it interacts with art. The morning started with the workshop «Best Practice Exchange on Time Management for Female Professors». The workshop was dedicated to a structured exchange among female professors to share and learn from each other about best practices they established regarding efficiency. In the afternoon, the participants were invited to a guided tour around Art Basel.
