Parental care – How animals communicate across generations
Lecture by Prof. Susan Mango as part of the series «Einblicke Biozentrum»
In a volatile world, parents try to prepare their children for the future. They not only pass on their genetic blueprint, but also communicate a subtle legacy of environmental memory.
This information, transcending DNA, carries impressions of the parent’s world, adapting swiftly and fading within a few generations. Prof. Susan Mango’s lab uses a small soil worm to study these intergenerational cues: from the environmental stimuli to the cryptic signals inherited in offspring. Join us to learn how life’s unseen baton is passed on to influence the lives of children, whether that of a lowly worm or a lofty human.
Lecture in English, followed by an aperitif. Admission free, registration not required.
Public lecture series: «Einblicke Biozentrum»
Scientists from the Biozentrum invite all interested persons to learn about their latest research. The lecture series takes the visitors on a journey into the world of muscles, nerves, cells and genes. You will become acquainted with the exciting fields of research and new discoveries in easy-to-understand presentations.
The University of Basel calendar lists events offered by the University of Basel, its numerous units, and accredited student organizations and associated institutions. They address a larger audience, are public and open to all. As a rule, admission is free.
