Work conditions
The University of Basel places great value on providing its staff with a progressive employment and work environment in which they have the greatest possible flexibility. One result is the introduction of the Home Office Regulation 2020. Health-promoting measures emphasize the importance of staff well-being.
In early 2020, even before the measures for the coronavirus pandemic came into effect, the University of Basel adopted new home office regulations. Up to 40% of working hours can now be spent working from home. Core hours have also been eliminated and digital time management was introduced (core hours means that all employees must be present during certain hours of the day). This allows a more flexible way of working.
(Mental) health in the home office
Health promotion at the University of Basel is important in ensuring that members of the university are satisfied, healthy and capable. This area is coordinated by the internal Training and Development office (POE). University sports are one part of health promotion.
In 2020, POE and university sports faced a particularly difficult challenge in supporting the mental health of staff and students from a distance.
POE offered workshops and tips for «working from home» and ENSA courses «First aid for mental health». University sports quickly put a number of sports courses online as videos and then moved their course offering on to Zoom.
In 2019 and 2020, more than 13,000 (2019: 7,970, 2020: 5,200) people participated in university sports programs. About two thirds were students and about 10% employees of the University of Basel.
