Der Schweizerische Nationalfonds vergibt zwei SNSF Consolidator Grants an Forscher der Universität Basel. Die auf fünf Jahre angelegten Projekte aus den Fachbereichen Geschichte und Informatik werden je mit rund 1,7 Millionen Franken unterstützt.
Prof. Dr. Michael N. Hall vom Biozentrum der Universität Basel erhält den Balzan-Preis 2024 für seine Forschung zu den biologischen Mechanismen des Alterns. Der Zellbiologe hat mit seiner Erforschung des Proteins TOR (Target of Rapamycin) ein Schlüsselelement für die Steuerung des Zellwachstums entdeckt, das auch bei der Entwicklung, der Alterung und einer Vielzahl von Krankheiten wie Krebs und Diabetes eine Rolle spielt.
Während die meisten bei Grammatik gähnen, entdeckte Sofian Bouaouina darin eine Faszination. Diese führte ihn von Diegten an die Universität Basel, wo er sich zunächst auf das Gymnasiallehramt für Französisch und Geschichte vorbereitete, bis er schliesslich auf den Geschmack der Linguistik kam.
Texte geben Einblick in andere Welten und vergangene Zeiten. Simon Tobias Bühler fokussiert sich aber lieber auf Bildwelten und forscht an der Schnittstelle von Archäologie und Kunstgeschichte. Die Begeisterung für alte Kulturen bekam er schon als Kind mit.
Die Gesundheit von Mensch, Tier und Umwelt steht in einer Wechselwirkung; davon geht das Konzept One Health aus. Mit diesem Ansatz forscht die Epidemiologin Helena Greter im Tschad. Das Ziel: den dort lebenden Nomaden und ihren Rinderherden Zugang zu medizinischer Versorgung verschaffen. Zur Biologie – und schliesslich zur Epidemiologie - kam die Wissenschaftlerin über die Kunst.
Er lebt von der Abwechslung. Während er als Doktorand an der Schnittstelle von Schweizer Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft forscht, zieht es Benjamin Jansen in seiner Freizeit in ferne Länder, um exotischen Tiere zu begegnen.
Kaum ist die Dissertation abgeschlossen, träumt Darja Schildknecht schon vom Postdoc: Die Wissenschaftlerin kann nicht genug bekommen von ihrer Arbeit. Auch wenn sie ihre Expertise jetzt erst einmal abseits der Akademie einbringen wird.
Jacqui Cho hat mehrere Jahre lang in Konfliktgebieten gearbeitet. Nun erforscht sie in ihrer Dissertation bei swisspeace, wie die Menschen in Konfliktgebieten ausländische Vermittlungsbemühungen wahrnehmen.
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Andrea Schenker-Wicki, Rektorin der Universität Basel und Präsidentin von Eucor – The European Campus, wurde von der Université de Haute-Alsace mit einer Ehrenpromotion ausgezeichnet.
