Mit grosser Zustimmung wurde der Biomediziner Prof. Dr. Primo Schär in der gestrigen Regenzsitzung zum Vizerektor Forschung und damit zum Nachfolger von Prof. Dr. Torsten Schwede gewählt. Dieser tritt am 1. Januar 2025 sein Amt als Präsident des Forschungsrats des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds an und legt seine universitäre Leitungsfunktion auf Ende des Frühjahrssemesters vorzeitig nieder.
Der kanadische Mathematiker Jacob Tsimerman wird mit dem internationalen Ostrowski-Preis für höhere Mathematik 2023 ausgezeichnet. Der Ostrowski-Preis ist mit 100'000 Schweizer Franken dotiert und nach dem Mathematikprofessor Alexander M. Ostrowski benannt, der an der Universität Basel lehrte.
Der Ausschuss des Stiftungsrates des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds (SNF) hat Prof. Dr. Torsten Schwede zum neuen Präsidenten des SNF-Forschungsrats gewählt. Der amtierende Vizerektor Forschung der Universität Basel wird sein Amt per 1. Januar 2025 antreten.
Der Schweizerische Nationalfonds (SNF) vergibt sechs weitere SNSF Starting Grants an die Universität Basel. Die Projekte stammen aus den Bereichen Biomedizin, Chemie, Umweltwissenschaften, Geschichte und Urban Studies.
Die Philosophisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät hat Prof. Kelly Chibale die Ehrenpromotion verliehen. Als Chemiker gründete er das Holistic Drug Discovery and Development Center (H3D) in Kapstadt, wo er unter anderem Wirkstoffe gegen Malaria entwickelt.
Prof. em. Dr. Marcel Tanner, ehemaliger Direktor des Schweizerischen Tropen- und Public Health-Instituts, erhält den Preis der Dr. J. E. Brandenberger-Stiftung.
Prof. Dr. Hendrik Scholl, Professor für Ophthalmologie an der Universität Basel und klinischer Leiter des Instituts für Molekulare und Klinische Ophthalmologie Basel (IOB), wurde von der ungarischen Semmelweis-Universität die Ehrendoktorwürde verliehen.

Der Informatiker Prof. Dr. Malte Helmert und die Musikwissenschaftlerin Prof. Dr. Hanna Walsdorf erhalten je einen hochdotierten Förderpreis des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds.
